Anche se un hobby è infondo all’elenco delle cose da fare o da poter fare nell’arco di una giornata, non importa, resta comunque una cosa seria. E se quello che ti sei scelto è la lettura, il più intellettuale di tutti, nessuno può biasimarti quando gli dedichi gran parte del tuo tempo. Un libro non è solo un’insieme di pagine che qualcun altro ha scritto e messo insieme, è un oggetto che può avere innumerevoli scopi e infiniti significati, dipende dall’uso che vuoi farne ed è quello a dividere il popolo dei “lettori” in cinque categorie: ossessionati, finti interessati, accidentali, cinefili travestiti da letterati, fashionisti, equilibristi. Gli ossessionati sono quelli che leggono di tutto e dovunque. Quelli che tengono il libro sempre a portata di mano, sul comodino vicino al letto, in borsa, in prossimità del water, una copia per ogni location che concilia la lettura. Quelli che se ne divorano quattro a settimana e che sono iscritti alla setta dei lettori estinti, andando nei boschi per vivere con saggezza e in profondità, succhiando tutto il midollo della vita. I finti interessati sono invece quelli che frequentano gli ossessionati e pur avendo interessi totalmente diversi, si vergognano di ammetterlo in loro presenza. Sono quelli a cui basta leggere il riassunto di un libro per coglierne l’essenza, anche perché tempo e voglia non ci sono, e sarebbero disposti a morire piuttosto che farsi cogliere impreparati. Sono quelli che durante una discussione aperta, in cui si analizza la trama nei minimi dettagli, non intervengono mai con opinioni personali, ma si limitano ad annuire come poveri imbecilli nel terrore che la loro ignoranza possa essere scoperta. Poi c’è la categoria degli accidentali, cioè quelli che leggono più per dovere che per piacere e si prendono la briga di farlo solo se ne vale la pena. In sostanza sono quelli che hanno le palle sul ceppo e sono obbligati a documentarsi o per portare a termine un risultato o per trovare risposte – spesso di natura esistenziale. – I cinefili travestiti da letterati non vogliono perdere intere giornate a leggere un libro quando possono godersi una versione interpretata da grandi attori e condita con effetti speciali da milioni di dollari sul grande schermo. Sono quelli che non hanno alcun complesso d’inferiorità nei confronti degli ossessionati, al contrario, si credono più furbi di loro e vanno a comprarsi il libro del film solo quando sono sicuri che diventerà un cult. Avere la versione scritta su uno scaffale, che quasi mai coincide con quella cinematografica, fa comunque figo. I fashionisti, invece, usano i libri come pezzi d’arredamento, sostituendoli ai classici soprammobili che fanno un po’ casa della nonna. Per sentirsi appagati devono avere The Vocabulary of Style , la storia di Valentino Garavani, la fotografia di Helmut Newton e i quattro volumi di Taschen su New York, Parigi, Berlino e Londra posizionati elegantemente sul tavolo in salotto. Sono quelli che non li leggono, ma li sfogliano e anche loro, come i bambini, sono pronti ad affermare che un libro senza figure non serve a niente. Si affidano alla forma più che alla sostanza, così pieni di carattere da riuscire ad indossarli anche come borse, quando chi le ha disegnate si chiama Olympia Le-Tan. E alla fine ci sono gli equilibristi, quelli che sanno fare buon uso dei libri pur tenendoli chiusi, magari mettendoli sulla testa per migliorare la postura e definire il portamento. Quelli che hanno tante idee, poco tempo, una sola necessita e non è quella di leggerli, ma di scriverli, perché per qualcuno di loro è l’unico modo per trovare una sorta di equilibrio 😉 .

Even if a hobby is the last thing to do at the end of a day, never mind, it’s something serious. And if you chose reading as a hobby, the most cultural of all, nobody can blame you if you spend alot of time on it. A book is not only and simply pages written and put together, it’s an object that can be useful for many purposes, it all depends on the use you want to make with it and this use divides the “readers” in five categories: obsessed, false interested, incidental, film-lovers disguised as book-lovers, fashionistas and acrobats. Obsessed are those who read anything and anywhere. They always have a book in their hands, on the bedside table, in their bag, close to the toilet, a book in every single location to stimulate reading. Those who read four books in a week and are part of the sect of extinct readers, going to the woods because they want to live deliberately, to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life. False interested are those who go out with obsessed readers and despite having completely different passions, they don’t dare to admit. They read a summary of a book to size its essence also because they don’t have time or will to read but they are to die not to be caught unprepared. They are those who, during a debate about a book when analysing the tiniest details, always stay silent, they never make comments and always say yes like idiots fearing that their ignorance can be revealed. Then, there are incidental readers, those who read as they must and not because they love to and they read something only if it’s worth it. They are compelled to be informed or to achieve a result or to find answers- usually big answers about the sense of life. Film-lovers disguised as book-lovers don’t want to spend days reading when they can benefit from a version with a super cast of actors and with billion dollar special effect. They don’t care about obsessed readers, on the contrary, they think they are more clever and they book the book after having seen the film only when sure it will become a cult. Having the written version of the film, which usually never coincides, is cool. Fashionistias use book as interior design elements as new and more contemporary knick-knacks. To feel well, they must own The Vocabulary of Style , Valentino Garavani’s biography, Helmut Newton shots and the four volumes by Taschen about New York, Paris, Berlin and London elegantly placed on the table in the living room. They don’t read books, they leaf through them and like children, they are ready to admit that a book with no pictures is completely useless.They care about style more than substance, so self confident to wear books as bags when the one who designed them is called Olympia Le-Tan. And then acrobats, those who can use closed books on their head to improve their balance and posture. Those who have so many ideas, little time and one need that is not that of reading but writing books because, for some of them, this the only way to find a balance 😉 .
