Immagino che ogni collezione che crei si ispiri a mondi diversi, parlami della tua primavera estate? E cosa ci aspetta nella prossima stagione? Questa collezione di borse in pelle luxury è nata per istinto. Ispirata allo ‘shibari’ che è una forma erotica e artistica di legatura giapponese. Mi sono concentrata sull’aspetto artigianale, la bellezza, la geometria, la combinazione degli stili con queste tecniche e con le pelli migliori rigorosamente cucite a mano da più di cinquecento punti. Ogni borsa è meticolosamente fatta a mano e realizzata nel mio studio a Londra dall’inizio alla fine e ultimata da me e dal mio team di talentuosi artigiani.
Temo ti abbiamo fatto questa domanda almeno mille volte, ma anche io sono curiosa… c’è un personaggio significativo che ha condizionato il tuo modo di tradurre la tua visione stilistica fino a renderti la designer di successo che sei oggi? Ci sono tante persone che hanno contribuito alla mia crescita e che mi hanno ispirato e continuano a ispirarmi, ma mia nonna mi ha sempre incoraggiata a provare diversi lavori sin da ragazzina. Quando creo ripenso ancora ai libri che mi ha regalato quando ero piccola.
Oggi, gli appassionati di moda pare che preferiscano investire il loro budget in accessori piuttosto che in pret-a-porter, la ragione è semplice: basta una borsa distintiva o un paio di scarpe iconiche a cambiare faccia a un look. Questo aspetto dovrebbe avvantaggiarti, ma è anche vero che creare un oggetto desiderabile, vista la grande concorrenza, non è sempre semplice. Quali sono i criteri che tieni in considerazione quando immagini il tuo pezzo di punta? Io sono molto tecnica e legata all’artigianato, sto iniziando ad interessarmi a dettagli inusuali che posso adattare alle mie collezioni. Quindi applico tutto questo a forme che sono funzionali e a borse che possono contenere di tutto che possano essere necessari e allo stesso tempo che possano essere indossati come oggetti di design. Io credo nelle donne che tengono al proprio aspetto, alla cura che mettono nei dettagli e che tengono alla qualità, che sono continuamente alla ricerca di qualche pezzo che le caratterizzi ma che sia unico e senza tempo.
Sei in questo mondo da qualche anno ormai, che consiglio daresti a un giovane stilista che vuole intraprendere questo tipo di carriera? Iscriversi a un corso di design, fare il più possibile tirocini in modo da acquisire il proprio mestiere. Assicurarsi di conoscere si le tecnologie CAD, ma anche imparare a realizzare una borsa a mano dall’inizio alla fine. Credo che l’unico modo per riuscire a realizzare delle borse alla perfezione sia conoscere esattamente come vengano costruite. E di avere il proprio brand solo quando si ha la certezza di aver sviluppato il proprio stile.
E ultima, quella di rito, quella che pongo a tutti i personaggi che ho intervistato fino a ora: hai un sogno nel cassetto? Il mio sogno è quello di trasferirmi un giorno in Costa Rica, comprare una parte di foresta tropicale e creare una riserva naturale per gli animali. Sento che la seconda parte della mia vita sarà dedicata alla conservazione e alla salvaguardia delle specie in modo da ricambiare Madre Natura in qualche modo.

I imagine that each collection you create is inspired by different worlds, tell me all about your spring summer one? What should we expect for next season? This season’s collection of luxury leather handbags was a process of instinct. Inspired by the world of Japanese ‘shibari’ which is a form of erotic, art and rope knotting. I have focused on the craft, beauty, geometry of the tying styles and combined these techniques with the finest leathers and over half a thousand hand-detailed stitches. Every bag is meticulously handmade in my London studio from start to finish by myself and my team of gifted artisans.
I am afraid you must have been asked this question at least a thousand times, but I am curious too… is there any meaningful person that has somehow conditioned your way of translating your stylistic vision to such an extent as to make you became the successful designer you are today? There are so many people who have inspired me and continue to inspire me, but my late grandmother always encouraged me to experiment with different crafts from a young age. When I create I still reference from books that she gave me when I was a little girl.
Today fashion fans seem to be preferring investing their budget into accessories instead of into pret-a-porter, the reason is simple: a remarkable handbag or an iconic pair of shoes are enough to make a look appearance change. That should be a pro from your point of view, but it is also true that creating a desirable object, in a world of competitors, is never easy. Which are the criteria you take in to consideration when imagining your flagship product? I am very technique and craft based, I also start with an interesting and unusual detail that I can then adapt throughout my collection. Then I apply this to my core shapes which are functional, a handbag must be able to contain everything that is necessary and then be worn as a design object. I believe women who care about their appearance have an attention to detail and quality, they are continually looking for a piece that distinguishes them but is timeless.
You have been in this field a few years now, which suggestions would you give to a stylist who wished to start this kind of career? Study a course in design, do as many internships as possible and learn your craft. Make sure you know all the latest CAD technologies but also learn how to make a handbag from start to finish by hand. I believe you can only design handbags properly if you know how they are constructed. Only start your own brand when you have developed your own unique sense of style.
And…last but not least, the same question I have asked all famous people I have interviewed so far: any long-cherished dream? My dream is to eventually move to Costa Rica, buy some rainforest and set up a nature reserve for animals. I feel the second half of my life will involve dedicating my life to conservation and trying to give back to Mother Earth in some way.
