Mi sono sempre chiesta dove potesse essere il quartier generale di Babbo Natale, ora lo so! A New York, all’angolo tra la 58esima e la Quinta, si chiama FAO SCHWARZ. E come definire diversamente questo grande negozio di giocattoli?!? All’ingresso due divertenti guardie vestite come l’iconico orsetto che rappresenta lo store, con divisa rossa e cappello, aprono la porta e davanti a voi: il paradiso dei piccoli…e anche dei grandi! Difficile descrivere il “rumore” all’interno: voci, urla, risate…è quello che si sente quando un luogo è affollato e ci sono tanti bambini eccitati per il regalo che devono scegliere, ma in mezzo a quel caos, stranamente non fastidioso, è come se un campanellino ci svegliasse da un lungo sonno per ricordarci che anche noi, qualche anno prima, siamo stati piccini e così pieni di entusiasmo. Potrei descrivervi lo spazio nei minimi dettagli, la zona caramelle, quella cioccolato Willy Wonka, quella in cui è possibile costruire il peluche personalizzato, la zona dedicata alla mia bambola preferita: Barbie…e ammetto che, una volta arrivata qui, non sono riuscita a resistere! Dopo tanto tempo, mi sono regalata una Barbie, un pezzo della collezione Dolls of the World Landmark Collection di cui fanno parte tre esemplari “monumentali” vestiti come il Big Ben, la Torre Eiffel e la Statua della Libertà…l’ultima doveva essere mia! I’ve always asked myself where Santa’s Headquarters, now I know! In New York, at the corner of 58th street and the 5th, it’s called FAO SCHWARZ. And how can you define this huge toy store otherwise?!? At the entrance two cheerful guards dressed like the teddy bear that represents the store itself, red uniform and hat, they open the door and before your eyes: kid’s heaven…and adults’ too! Difficult to describe the “noise” inside: voices, shouts, laughs…this is the noise of a crowded place full of excited children for the gifts they can choose, but in that chaos, strangely not disturbing at all, it’s like a bell waking us up from a long sleep to remind us that we too were children and so enthusiastic once. I could describe the space in detail, the sweets area, the Willy Wonka chocolate section, the area where you can create your personalised teddy bear and the area dedicated to my favourite doll: Barbie….and I must confess I couldn’t resist! After so many years, I’ve given myself a treat and I bought a Barbie doll, a piece of the Dolls of the World Landmark Collection in which there are three “monumental” dolls dress like the Big Ben, the Tour Eiffel and the Statue of Liberty…this last one had to be mine!
