In ogni scuola del mondo, c’è sempre un’elezione tacita che decreta chi è la più gnocca. Difficile stabilire quali sono le regole che ti fanno essere quella che non deve chiedere mai o quella che non ottiene manco se si mette in ginocchio sui ceci. Non è sempre e solo l’aspetto fisico a dare a Cesare quel che è Cesare, è che a volte le cose si incastrano in modo strano, magari basta essere nel posto giusto, al momento giusto, con la persona giusta e in un secondo la vita cambia, la ragazza della porta accanto diventa la tipa irraggiungibile con cui tutti vogliono uscire. – Ora, riflettendoci, questo succede anche quando smetti di andare a scuola e diventi grande, ma questa è un’altra storia. – La situazione sociale che ho appena descritto, potrebbe essere la stessa che riguarda le stampe più importanti della storia della moda. Anche qui, ci sono le più famose e quelle meno, quelle che vogliono tutti e quelle che non si caga nessuno. Uscire con una stampa che ti piace, ma che nessuno dei tuoi amici definisce figa, è come uscire con una ragazza che tu reputi interessante, ma che il tuo gruppo vede come un cesso e, a meno che tu non abbia una grande personalità, prendere una posizione del genere può compromettere anche la tua reputazione. Meglio non rischiare, andare sul sicuro e uscire con qualcosa che abbia il consenso di massa. La stampa a righe è il corrispettivo della reginetta della scuola, piace a tutti senza un vero perché e se qualcuno non ne è innamorato, a meno che non si tratti di un carcerato, deve avere qualcosa che non va. Uscire con una stampa a pois, invece, equivale a portare a cena la migliore amica della reginetta della scuola, per osmosi è figa anche lei. E’ divertente, chic, briosa, forse non è la più popolare e non è nemmeno quella con cui fare coppia fissa, ma tutti ci hanno fatto un pensierino. Poi i fiori, chi non si è concesso anche solo una scappatella con una stampa floreale? Liberty-na, facile, spassosa, sta bene con tutto e con tutti. E’ la tipa di larghe vedute, pacifica, rilassata, fedele sostenitrice del motto “fate l’amore, non la guerra“. Il tartan, invece, assomiglia alla casinista della classe, quella carina, ribelle, sovversiva, la compagna perfetta con cui bigiare la scuola. Al contrario, il vichy è l’amore segreto della tua vita, quella che incontri all’asilo con il grembiulino a quadretti e anche se hai solo 5 anni, la vedi già come moglie e madre perfetta che cucinerà, rassetterà la casa, rammenderà i calzini e che non ti sgriderà neanche quando mancherai il canestro del water. Ma ci sono anche le relazioni di comodo che non necessariamente prevedono il sesso, anzi. Uscire con il paisley, significa passare pomeriggi interi con la più secchiona che ti aiuta a fare i compiti. E’ carina, è concettuale, in giro non si vede spesso perché preferisce stare a casa a studiare. Andare a zonzo con lei non aumenterà la tua popolarità, ma i voti miglioreranno e i tuoi amici non ti daranno mai del coglione per la scelta che hai fatto, il ché è già un buon risultato. E poi c’è sempre l’effetto sorpresa, quella che non non sa stare in riga, che non riesce a fare il punto della situazione, quella che non è in-quadrata, che è pure allergica al polline dei fiori, quella che, all’inizio dell’anno scolastico, si presenta senza un filo di trucco, con gli occhiali spessi due dita, la maglia over e i capelli spettinati, ma che alla fine dei corsi, dopo una sessione di trucco, parrucco e styling, dà filo da torcere anche alla reginetta della scuola, diventando quella che tutti vogliono invitare al ballo. Il primo ad esserci riuscito è stato Christian Dior nel 1947, consacrando l’impronta distintiva del pied de poule e rendendolo un simbolo di raffinatezza e stile. Con la sua personalità ha mostrato al mondo la ragazza più elegante, la meno scontata che aveva sempre avuto davanti agli occhi, ma di cui nessuno si era ancora accorto.

In any school in the world, there’s a silent election to state who’s the sexiest girl of all. It’s difficult to say what are the rules that make you be the one who never needs to ask and the other who never obtains even if begging on her knees. It’s not always a question of physical appearance to give credit where credit is due, sometimes things just happen, you simply need to be in the right place, at the right time, with the right person and things change, the girl next door turns into the most desired girl and everybody wants to ask her out. – Now, thinking about it, this also happens when you leave school and grow up, but this is another story. – The social fact that I’ve just described could apply to the most important prints of fashion. Here too, there are printed patterns everyone wants and other that nobody gives a damn. Going out with a print you like but that no one of your friends like, is just the same as going out with a girl you fancy but no one of your friends like and unless you have such a great self-confidence, this situation can compromise your reputation. Better not to run the risk, stay safe and go out with something that is socially correct. Striped patterns are the beauty queen of the school, everybody like them and unless you are a prisoner, everybody is in love with stripes. Going out with polka dots is like asking out the beauty queen’s best friends, for the property of osmosis, she’s pretty too. It’s funny, chic, cheerful, perhaps not the most popular and not the one and only but everybody has a thought on her. And then, flowers, who on earth has never had a flirt with a floral print? Liberty-ne, easy-going, fits all and everything. She’s the open-minded girl, quiet, relaxed and a supporter of the motto “make love not war”. Tartan, on the contrary, is the goofer of the class, nice, rebel, the perfect companion to cut a class. The vichy is the secret love of your life, the girl you at the kindergarten in her pink uniform and even if you’re only 5, you already see her as the perfect wife and mother, you imagine her while cooking, tidying up, sewing and she will never told you off. But there also relationships that are not based on sex. Going out with paisley means spending entire afternoons with the geek girl in your class who helps you with your homework. She is nice and clever, she is not messing around as she loves studying; if you ask her out you won’t be popular but your marks will get better and your friends will never blame you for your choice and this is already a good result. And then, surprisingly, the one who can live in line, she can’t make her point, she can’t live in a square box and she’s even allergic to flowers, the girl who, at the start of the school year, has no make-up on, glasses, over-size T-shirts and hair in a mess, but then, at the end of the term, after a hard session of styling, she becomes the one everybody wants to ask out for the ball.
