What would you like to be when you grow up?

Dopo “come ti chiami?“, quello che si chiede ai bambini è “cosa vuoi fare da grande?” E la conversazione poi finisce lì perché loro si annoiano da morire, ma a quella domanda rispondono sempre, senza nessuna esitazione. Hanno le idee chiare, sono proprio convinti che riempiranno il mondo di astronauti, piloti, dottori, dottoresse, attori, cantanti e ballerine. Di fare carriera non gliene frega una cippa, hanno altre preoccupazioni, pensano alla riscossa delle Tartarughe Ninja, a mettere insieme un po’ di amici per riunirle tutte e quattro e farle combattere, pensano a come vestire Barbie per il matrimonio, dopo essersi liberate di Skipper che è più giovane e aver incastrato Ken in un rapporto a due. Le cose si complicano solo dopo qualche anno, quando si ritrovano in una classe di liceo e scoprono che nell’orario scolastico non c’è nessuna lezione di pilotaggio, recitazione, canto e danza. Dovrebbero temere il peggio, ma hanno altro a cui pensare: a come domare i capelli col gel, a un metodo efficace per coprire i brufoli e sanno di avere a disposizione ancora un po’ di tempo per rendere il pianeta più stimolante. Gli anni continuano a passare e all’università la situazione si fa più problematica, quando si trovano di fronte a un libro di diritto privato che mai insegnerà loro come atterrare sulla luna, come interpretare il ruolo di Anna dei miracoli, come usare il diaframma e come eseguire alla perfezione un grand rond de jambe. Ma non è questo a farli preoccupare, pensano a come preparare gli esami o a come trovare i soldi per farsi aiutare da Cepu. Ufficialmente non sono ancora diventati grandi e tecnicamente hanno ancora qualche anno per concretizzare quell’idea che avevano in mente da bambini. Ma in certi casi, il vero tracollo arriva dopo la laurea, quando si accorgono che averla non servirà a farli diventare quello che volevano diventare. E’ la resa dei conti. Il cervello spinge sul tasto rewind e la risposta a quella domanda, a cui avevano dato un responso con tanta convinzione tanto tempo fa, sta lì davanti a loro, come uno spietato strozzino che non fa sconti e vuole ritirare il prestito pattuito. Le cose hanno preso una brutta piega o hanno solo cambiato forma, rinunciando ai ricci, da sempre associati ai capricci? L’ipotetico astronauta si accorge di avere anche più di un problema da comunicare a Houston, è un fumatore claustrofobico che soffre pure di vertigini, le uniche cose che può accettare di veder crollare a picco sono i titoli bancari che ha venduto al suo miglior cliente, dopo essere diventato un promotore finanziario. Il dottore ha mantenuto la promessa, ma non opera, lavora in uno studio legale, è ipocondriaco e sviene anche solo al pensiero di fare un prelievo di sangue. Quello che voleva fare l’attore è troppo timido per stare davanti a una telecamera, non avrebbe nemmeno il coraggio di pubblicare un video su YouTube, fa l’impiegato all’ufficio postale, ma non esce di casa se non è pettinato come Zac Efron. La cantante si è innamorata di un dj che le ha promesso di presentarla ad un amico discografico che produrrà il suo disco. Lei sta ancora aspettando di conoscerlo, ma nel frattempo è diventata mamma di tre bambini e l’unico posto in cui attualmente si esibisce è il piatto doccia quando trova il tempo di lavarsi i capelli. La ballerina è una golosa inguaribile, non vuole saperne di stare perennemente a dieta e rompersi i piedi dentro un paio di scarpette. Della sua taglia 46 è orgogliosa, come lo è della pasticceria che ha aperto a pochi metri dal teatro La Scala, in cui, ogni tanto, entra anche Roberto Bolle. Il sogno non è sparito nel nulla, ha solo cambiato le sue sembianze. Se inseguirlo impone sacrifici e rinunce che non si è pronti ad affrontare, spesso è preferibile trasformarlo in una “forma di vita” diversa, in un cambio di programma che non prevede prove generali e desidera solo gestire la diretta nel modo migliore, senza rimpianti. E se ce ne fosse anche uno solo, un piano B è sempre contemplato, qualunque sia il numero delle candeline che avete spento. Il tempo che serve a realizzare un sogno è direttamente proporzionale alla sua grandezza, ma quando anche la forza di volontà è grande, non esiste ostacolo che non possa essere aggirato. After asking them “What’s your name?”, the next question you usually ask children is “What would you like to be when you grow up?” and then the conversation ends as they get bored but they always answer that question, with no hesitation. They have a clear idea in their mind, they are convinced the world will be full of astronauts, pilots, doctors, actors, singers and dancers. They don’t give a damn about career, they have other troubles in their mind such as the revenge of Ninja turtles, putting together a group of four friends and let the fight of the turtles start, they think about how to dress Barbie for her wedding after having got rid of the younger Skipper and made Ken fall in love. Things get more complicated only a few years after when they are at secondary school and find out there are no piloting, acting, singing and dance class. They should ear for the worse but even then they have other trouble in their mind: how to tame rebel hair with gel, effective anti-spot methods and they know they still have time to think about the future destiny of our planet. Years go by and at university the situation gets tough, they are facing a book of private law that will never teach them how to land on the moon, how to become a Hollywood star, how to use their midriff or how to do a perfect rond de jambe. But they are still not worried as they are thinking about any possible strategy to pass their exams. They have not officially grown up yet and in theory they can still have some years to make their child’s dream come true. But, in some cases, the real breakdown happens after graduation, when they realise that having that piece of paper would not help them to become what they want to. It’s the reckoning day. The brains pushes the rewind button and the reply to that question they firmly answered years before is there like a merciless slave-driver who wants its loan back. Have things taken a nasty turn or have they simply changed direction abandoning hairpin bends forever? The hypothetical astronaut realises he has more than just one problem to tell Houston, he is a claustrophobic smoker who suffers from vertigo and they only things he can see falling down are securities he sold to his best customer as he is a bank broker. The doctor has kept his promise but he doesn’t operate, he works in a law-firm, he is hypochondriac and faints at the view of blood. The one who dreamt about being an actor is too shy to for a camera and he wouldn’t even have the courage to post a video on YouTube, he works at the post office but he doesn’t leave home unless with his hair in the style of Zac Efron. The singer has fallen in love with a D-j who promised her to launch her in the music industry. She is still waiting but, meanwhile, she has given birth to three babies and the only stage she can afford is singing in the shower when she finds a little time to wash her hair. The dancer is a greedy-guts, she doesn’t give a damn about diets and swollen feet in ballet shoes. She is proud of her size and proud of the pastry shop recently opened next to the La Scala theatre where sometimes she meets Roberto Bolle. The dream has not vanished, it has just changed. If fulfilling it means facing sacrifice you’re not ready to, it is preferable to turn it into a different “life style”, a sudden change of program which doesn’t need rehearsal, a live show to live with no regrets. And even if just one, a B plan is always there regardless of the number of candles on your birthday cake. Time needed to fulfil a dream is directly proportional to the majesty of the dream itself, but when you have a strong will, there’s no obstacle you can’t overcome.
