Si fa presto a dire vintage!

Diciamoci la verità…questa parola, già di suo, ha un certo fascino e quello che realmente rappresenta ancora di più! Indossare qualcosa che non è solo di seconda mano, ma, in casi particolarmente fortunati, è addirittura un simbolo di un’epoca passata della moda, è senza dubbio un’emozione. Ma siamo davvero precisi quando etichettiamo un pezzo come “vintage”? Oppure il solo fatto di sentirne parlare così spesso ci induce ad abusarne? Siamo certi che l’oggetto in questione abbia spento realmente le sue venti candeline o siamo noi a giudicarlo abbastanza vecchio da considerarlo tale? Molto spesso abbiamo gli armadi talmente pieni che bastano un paio di stagioni per farci giudicare “vintage” un abito dalle forme e dalle lunghezze ormai sorpassate e non parliamo dei tacchi o delle sagome della suola di una scarpa! Ogni volta che indosso qualcosa di un po’ datato, sono io la prima ad usare volutamente questa espressione in modo improprio. Non è tutto oro quello che luccica e non tutto ciò che è vecchio è vintage. Forse i miei cimeli non saranno una testimonianza importante di un momento storico, ma certamente una del mio stile passato e prima di separarmene, cercherò di valutare con lungimiranza…Chi mi dice che quello che oggi giudico obsoleto, domani non possa raccontare un momento della moda che non tornerà più?

Let’s be honest…this word has a certain charm itself and what it stands for is even more charming! Wearing a piece that is not only second-hand but, in very special circumstances, the symbol of a past time, able to tell the history of fashion trends, is a real and pure emotion. But are we correct when labelling a piece as “vintage”? Or, as the word is very popular now, do we often over-use it? Are we sure that the piece has celebrated its twentieth birthday or is it just us considering it old? It often happens this way, sometimes our wardrobes are so full that after a couple of Seasons, we are ready to say that a cloth or an accessory is “vintage”, simply for their obsolete length and shapes, not to mention the shape of heels and shoe soles! The phrase: “All that glitters is not gold” is directly proportional to “All that is old is not vintage”! But I’m the first one laughing at this phrase used in an improper way…a dress of a past fashion collection with a not-too-much-recognizable pattern and a pair of old sandals of which I still love the colour are my outfit for today. Well, perhaps they are not witnessing such an important moment of fashion history, but for sure of my style of some years ago. And this is it…if nobody had ever had something so special not to be able to give it away, vintage wouldn’t exist…be far-sighted and before considering a piece simply old and out-of-fashion, always think first and imagine that, one day, perhaps, that piece could tell a part of history that will never be back!
